Dia de los Muertos Remembrance

The children and staff of Escuelita will again celebrate dia de los muertos (Day of the Dead), a Latin-
American tradition through which we honor and remember our deceased loved ones on the eve of
November 1st. It is customary on that day to install an altar that pays homage to the person or persons
who have passed away. The altar can contain photographs of the deceased, along with small mementos
of significance to them. Favorite flowers and food offerings are also displayed on the altar.
With the teachers’ assistance, the children in each classroom at Escuelita will create and
contribute crafts such as paper flowers, candle holders, papier-mache foods, etc., for the school altar.
If you wish for your family to participate in this school-wide dia de los muertos altar that will
be installed in the playground area, please bring a framed photograph of your deceased loved one.
Please include the name and a short biography or description of the deceased and the relationship she
or he has with your child. We request you drop the framed photograph and the biography with your
child’s teachers or in the front office by Monday, October 25th. We will return your photographs to
you one week later.
